Before You Design a Beauty Brand, Answer These 7 Questions
BEFORE YOU DESIGN A BEAUTY BRAND, ANSWER THESE 7 QUESTIONS
Design is easier when it has something precise to express. Before the logo, packaging system, color palette or campaign world, a beauty founder should be able to answer seven questions.
01 · WHO IS THIS REALLY FOR?
What does this customer already buy? What are they tired of? What makes them trade up? What makes them skeptical? A useful customer definition changes decisions.
02 · WHAT DOES THE BRAND UNDERSTAND THAT THE CATEGORY DOES NOT?
Maybe the category overcomplicates a simple need, treats efficacy and pleasure as opposites or speaks through clichés. Strong brands often begin with a tension the founder sees clearly.
03 · WHAT ARE WE ASKING THE CUSTOMER TO BELIEVE?
Every brand makes a promise. If you cannot articulate it, the visual identity will be forced to invent one.
04 · WHY CAN WE CREDIBLY OWN THIS?
Founder experience, formulation, provenance, process, community or professional authority can turn positioning from aspiration into strategy.
05 · WHAT SHOULD FEEL DIFFERENT?
Clinical or sensual? Precise or abundant? Quiet or expressive? Historic or future-facing? These decisions give creative direction a boundary.
06 · WHAT DOES THE BUSINESS NEED TO BECOME?
Will it enter retail, expand internationally, add categories or build a professional channel? Strategy should make room for ambition without pretending the company is already there.
07 · WHAT MUST NEVER CHANGE?
Identify the truth the brand needs to protect as it grows: a philosophy, product standard, customer relationship, ritual, tone or point of view.
THE M&M VIEW
Design should reveal strategy, not replace it. The goal is enough clarity that identity becomes an expression of the business rather than a collection of attractive preferences.
