HOW MANY PRODUCTS SHOULD A HAIRCARE BRAND LAUNCH WITH?
There is no universally correct number. The better question is whether the opening assortment makes the brand easier to understand.
START WITH THE CUSTOMER’S ENTRY POINT
Where does the relationship begin? Shampoo and conditioner? Scalp care? A treatment? Styling? The opening assortment needs a clear door. If every product is equally essential, none becomes the obvious place to begin.
IDENTIFY THE HERO
A hero product should carry a disproportionate amount of the brand story. It can demonstrate the point of view, technology or ritual and give press, creators, stylists and customers something specific to remember.
BUILD A RITUAL, NOT A CATALOG
Haircare is naturally sequential. Cleanse. Condition. Treat. Style. Finish. That does not mean every brand needs every step at launch. It means the products that do launch should have relationships.
DO NOT LAUNCH THE FUTURE ALL AT ONCE
Every additional SKU adds inventory, education, photography, sampling, merchandising and forecasting. More importantly, it adds another decision for a customer still learning what the brand means.
MAKE EXPANSION FEEL INEVITABLE
A good opening architecture contains clues about the future. Future products should feel like rooms inside a house that was already designed for them.
THE M&M VIEW
Launch with enough product to make the idea real and enough restraint to make the idea clear. The customer should understand where to start, why the products belong together and what the brand understands about hair that they want more of.
